How to Get a Medical Window Tint Exemption in Florida

If you suffer from a medical condition that makes you highly sensitive to sunlight, Florida law allows you to bypass standard window tinting limits. Under Florida Statute § 316.29545, qualified individuals can get a Sunscreening Medical Exemption Certificate to legally install darker window tints.

Here is exactly how the process works, who qualifies, and how to apply.

Who Qualifies for a Florida Tint Exemption?

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) grants exemptions to individuals diagnosed with medical conditions that require limited exposure to light.

Common qualifying conditions include:

  • Lupus (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus)
  • Dermatomyositis
  • Albinism
  • Vitiligo
  • Xeroderma Pigmentosum
  • Other autoimmune diseases or severe photosensitivity disorders

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Download the Official Form

You must complete Form HSMV 83390 (Application for Sunscreening Medical Exemption).

Step 2: Get a Physician's Certification

Your doctor must fill out and sign the Physician's Statement of Certification section on the back of the form. Qualifying authorities include:

  • Licensed physicians or dermatologists.
  • Physician assistants or Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNPs) acting under a physician's protocol.

Step 3: Submit the Application and Fee

Mail the completed form, a photocopy of your Florida Driver's License or ID card, and the small state fee ($6.30 per vehicle) to the Bureau of Motorist Compliance in Tallahassee:

Bureau of Motorist Compliance
2900 Apalachee Pkwy, Mail Stop 97
Tallahassee, FL 32399

Important Rules to Remember

  • No Expiration: Once issued, your Florida medical exemption certificate never expires.
  • Non-Transferable: The certificate is tied directly to the vehicle's VIN. If you sell or trade your car, the exemption becomes void, and you must legally remove the dark tint before transferring ownership.
  • Keep It in the Glove Box: You must keep the physical certificate in your vehicle at all times to present to law enforcement if you are pulled over.
